LASER VISION CORRECTION
LASIK (Laser Assisted in-Situ Keratomileusis) is actually a
combination of two older procedures. It combines Automated
Lamellar Keratomeilusis (ALK) and Excimer laser
photoablation (PRK) to correct nearsightedness,
farsightedness, and astigmatism to reduce or eliminate the
need for glasses or contact lenses.
The procedure is performed by creating a flap in the
cornea with an instrument called a microkeratome. This flap
is then lifted away from the central cornea.
The underlying corneal tissue is then sculpted with the
excimer laser. The laser treats an area that is programmed
based on the prescription of your eyes.
Following the cool laser ablation, the corneal flap is
then put back into its original position. The entire
procedure is performed with topical anesthesia (drops) with
little or no discomfort.
The surgery usually takes about ten minutes to perform
and visual recovery is rapid, although it may vary from
patient to patient. |
